What You’re Really Chasing…

At the root of almost everything we do, there’s a deep desire for four things. They drive our decisions, shape our goals, and influence nearly every relationship we have:

  • Achievement – the longing to accomplish something meaningful.
  • Approval – the need to be seen, valued, and validated.
  • Connection – the desire to belong and to not feel alone.
  • Comfort – the craving for peace, safety, and rest.

None of these desires are bad. In fact, they were placed in us by God Himself. The problem comes when we start chasing them in all the wrong ways.

So what do most of us do? We pray for them… and then look for them in flings, rings, and other things. We try to earn achievement through our careers, chase approval through likes and compliments, seek connection through relationships that can’t satisfy, and run to comfort through addictions that promise escape but deliver emptiness.

And here’s the hard truth: that never really works, does it?

  • When I chased comfort in secret addictions, I ended up with very public discomfort.
  • When I looked for connection from people, I found myself disconnected from God.
  • When I sought approval from others, I only ended up disapproving of myself.
  • And when I pursued achievement without purpose, it left me with a life that looked successful on the outside but felt painfully empty on the inside.

Maybe you’ve been there too. Maybe you’re there right now.

Why the Chase Fails

The reason this cycle fails is simple: we were never designed to fill eternal needs with temporary things. Earthly substitutes always break down. Relationships disappoint. Achievements fade. Approval shifts with the crowd. Comfort gets interrupted by the next storm in life.

But God created those longings in us so that they would point us back to Him. They were never meant to be satisfied here on earth—they were meant to be satisfied from above.

The Real Solution

The breakthrough for me came when I stopped praying, “God, fix this situation,” and instead started praying the prayer Jesus taught:

“On earth as it is in Heaven.”

That one shift in perspective changed everything.

Because what’s so special about Heaven?

It’s where Jesus lives. And when Jesus is the source, everything else takes its rightful place.

  • Achievement gains purpose—it’s no longer about what I build, but about who I’m becoming.
  • Approval becomes freedom—I don’t have to live for the applause of people when I know I already have the approval of my Father.
  • Connection feels whole—because it flows out of intimacy with the One who created me.
  • Comfort becomes lasting peace—not a fragile escape, but a secure presence that never leaves.

My Prayer for You

Maybe you’ve spent years chasing. Maybe you’ve spent decades trying to find fulfillment in achievements, relationships, or possessions, only to come up short.

My prayer is that this would be the season you stop running after substitutes and start seeking the Source. That you’d discover the freedom of asking God to bring Heaven into your life—right here, right now.

Because what you’re longing for isn’t found in people, possessions, or performance.

It’s found in Him.

And when you finally find Jesus at the center of it all, you’ll realize: what you were chasing was never out there. It was waiting for you above.
